What we do

The site publishes current exchange rate information, historical currency data and plain-language guides explaining how banks, currency exchange providers and fintech companies price international money transfers and foreign exchange.

Who Runs CurrencyExchangeNearMe.com

CurrencyExchangeNearMe.com is an independent project created and managed by Mike Miller, an Ontario-based marketing professional with a strong interest in consumer finance and helping Canadians find better currency exchange options.

The site's goal is simple: help Canadians find reputable currency exchange services, compare options, and avoid unnecessary fees or poor exchange rates. Every recommendation and resource is designed to provide practical value and make exchanging money easier to understand.

CurrencyExchangeNearMe.com operates without a large editorial team or corporate backing. It focuses on providing clear, useful information that helps readers make informed decisions when buying or selling foreign currency.

Where our exchange rate data comes from

Every number on the site shows its date and source, so you can check it yourself.

Live market rate
Mid-market (interbank) rates from currencyapi.com, a licensed market data provider, stored every 15 minutes on business days. This is the headline rate on the USD to CAD, CAD to USD and other rate pages.
Bank of Canada daily rate
The official daily rate from the Bank of Canada Valet API (for example FXUSDCAD), published each business day around 4:30 p.m. ET. It is used for historical charts, period averages and the Calgary comparisons.
Canadian bank rates
Each business day morning, the published non-cash US dollar rates of RBC, TD, Scotiabank, National Bank and Desjardins are recorded from each bank's public rate page, with the time and a screenshot.
Transfer quotes
Quotes for sending money between countries come from Wise's public price comparison, with the time each quote was collected.
Why it matters
Banks and payment providers add a foreign exchange spread on top of the mid-market rate. The rates on this site are a transparent benchmark to compare offers against.
If data is late
Rates refresh automatically on business days. If a source is late or unavailable, the page shows the time of the last verified data instead of claiming it is current.

Historical exchange rate charts

Our historical charts and averages are built from official Bank of Canada exchange rate data, to help you follow currency movements over time.

  • Each rate page shows the last 12 months, with period figures for 7, 30 and 90 days, 12 months, the last full month and the last full year.
  • The historical exchange rates tool shows daily rates and monthly or yearly averages for 22 currencies, for any range back to January 2017, with a CSV download.

Weekends and statutory holidays have no published rate, so they do not appear in the data.

How provider comparisons are calculated

When we compare banks, money transfer services, exchange specialists or storefronts, we use the same method to estimate the true cost of a currency conversion:

  1. Record the provider's published or quoted exchange rate, with its date and time.
  2. Compare it with a market benchmark from the same moment: the stored market rate nearest to the time a bank rate was recorded, or the Bank of Canada rate for the same date for phoned and quoted prices.
  3. Include any stated transfer, service or conversion fee.
  4. Calculate the total cost as a percentage of the transaction value, and in dollars on a stated amount.
  5. Show the effective exchange rate, the estimated total cost and the date of every price.

We review provider information regularly and update pages when we find a material change in pricing.
