  1. Market rate. Mid-market USD to CAD from a licensed market data provider, stored every 15 minutes on business days with its timestamp. The first rate at or after 9:30 a.m. ET is kept separately and shown for reference.
  2. Bank rates. Each business day the published non-cash USD rate of Desjardins, National Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, TD is recorded in both directions, with the time, the page it was read from and a screenshot.
  3. Benchmark. Each bank rate is compared with the stored 15-minute market rate nearest to the time it was recorded.
  4. FX margin. Selling USD: benchmark minus bank rate, divided by benchmark. Buying USD: bank rate minus benchmark, divided by benchmark. Fees are not included.
  5. Bank of Canada. The Bank of Canada daily rate is shown as context after it is published, around 4:30 p.m. ET. It is not a customer rate and is not used in the comparison.
  6. Corrections. Recorded observations are not edited. If an error is found, a dated correction is published beside it.
