How these rates are calculated

  1. Daily rates. The Bank of Canada publishes one rate for each currency against the Canadian dollar every business day. These are the daily rates shown.
  2. Other pairs. For two currencies other than the Canadian dollar, the rate is the first currency's Bank of Canada rate divided by the second's, on the same day.
  3. Averages. A monthly or yearly average is the simple average of the daily rates in that month or year. High and low are the highest and lowest daily rates, with their dates.
  4. Reference only. These are not customer rates. Banks and exchange services add a margin.

Frequently asked questions

What is a monthly average exchange rate?

It is the average of the daily exchange rates published on each business day of that month. A yearly average is the same for every business day of the year. Weekends and holidays have no published rate and are not counted.

Where do these rates come from?

From the Bank of Canada, which publishes one exchange rate for each currency against the Canadian dollar every business day, around 4:30 p.m. ET. Rates between two other currencies, such as euros to US dollars, are worked out through the Canadian dollar on the same day.

Which exchange rate should I use for taxes in Canada?

The Canada Revenue Agency generally accepts the Bank of Canada rate for the day of a transaction, or the annual average rate for amounts received or paid throughout the year. Check the agency's guidance or an accountant for your situation.

Can I get a customer rate at these averages?

No. These are reference rates. Banks and exchange services add a margin, so a customer selling a currency receives less and a customer buying pays more. The live rate pages on this site compare customer rates with the market rate.

Can I download the data?

Yes. Use the CSV link under the table. It has the same rows as the table, with the source noted at the bottom.

How far back do the rates go?

To January 2017, when the Bank of Canada started its current daily exchange rate series. Daily rates are shown up to 13 months at a time; monthly and yearly averages can cover the whole period.
